Fix Code 80072efe Error
You may receive error code 80072efe while checking for the latest Windows Updates and patches. Your computer works fine apart from this trouble. In this article, I’ll discuss a few tips & tricks that majority of users use to fight with this situation.
- Infection of Win32/Alureon.H Trojan
- Temporarily Disable Antivirus Protection

Infection of Win32/ Alureon.H Trojan
Do the steps given below to remove Win32 /Alureon.H virus:
- Restart your computer in the Safe Mode. Use F8 key, select Safe Mode with Networking option before your operating system starts booting.
- Click Start, select Run. Alternatively, you can press Windows Key + R.
- Type RegEdit and press ENTER.
- Delete the following registry keys. They are infected.
- HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PopCapLoader.PopCapLoaderCtrl2
- HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PopCapLoader.PopCapLoaderCtrl2.1
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Low Rights\RunDLL32Policy\f3ScrCtr.dll
- Start a full registry scan with RegInOut Registry Cleaner and repair all errors made by the Trojan in your registry.
- Open My Computer and delete the following files and folders permanently. All of them are be infected.
- C:\Program Files\PCBugFinderPro\PCBugFinderPro.exe
- C:\Program Files\PCBugFinderPro
- C:\Documents and Settings\Lori\Application Data\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.reg
- Restart your computer in the normal mode.
Temporarily Disable Antivirus Protection
If there is an antivirus program running in the background while Windows Updates are installed, then consider disabling it temporarily. This is because error code 80072efe may appear if the antivirus is preventing the update process in any form. Right click the system tray icon of your antivirus and select Turn Off Real-Time Protection or Disable Protection option.
Remove CatRoot2 Folder
There is a folder called CatRoot2, usually located in the System32 directory. First, stop associated services and then remove this folder to fix error code 80072efe.
- Click Start, select Run. Type Services.msc and press ENTER.
- Right click Cryptographic service and select Stop.
- Minimize the window and open My Computer.
- Browse C:\Windows\System32 and delete the CatRoot2 folder. Select Yes to confirm.
- Repeat Step 1 above, right click Cryptographic service and select Start.
- Restart your computer.
Reregister Internet Explorer Files
Each DLL file used by Internet Explorer is registered in the system registry for the smooth functioning of the software.
You may receive error code 80072efe if some of the registered DLL files have problems, say the registration entries in the system registry database are corrupt, etc. Reregister them to fix your issue.
- Click Start, point to All Programs | Accessories.
- Right click Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator.
- Type the following commands one-by-one while pressing ENTER at the end of each command.

- Close Command Prompt when you’re done.
The settings set to your web browser can be the root cause of error code 80072efe. Reset them to get rid of this error.
- Open Internet Explorer, press Alt key. Select Tools | Internet Options.
- Click Advanced tab in the new dialog, and click Reset. Confirm it.
